The purpose of this book is to take stories rooted, for the most part, in New Jersey’s folklore, and place them within a historical narrative grounded on facts. Distant from the state’s famous Revolutionary War battlefields, along both New Jersey’s Atlantic Ocean and Delaware River Bay coasts, a distinctive type of conflict was playing out. The combatants were privateers, militia troops, partisans, and illicit traders motivated not only by divergent political loyalties, but also by a quest for profit, spoils, and retribution. Author Cobb’s work chronicles this colorful history of coastal New Jersey during the American War for Independence.
